Music Makers

A CREATIVE SPACE FOR CHILDREN TO JUST BE

Creativity at their pace…

Music Makers is a relaxed, welcoming music group for children not currently accessing mainstream education settings. Facilitated by our specialist creative health practitioner, music is used to support engagement, togetherness, and building self-confidence.

  • No pressure to perform

  • No individual targets or KPIs

  • Being in the room is enough

Evidence shows that creative health activities — including music and group arts projects — support health and wellbeing, helping children feel more connected, resilient, and able to cope with life’s challenges.

What we do…

Tuesdays

1:45pm-2:45pm

Portishead Youth & Community Centre

Children arrive with their parent, carer, or support worker, and explore instruments at their own pace, joining in with our specialist-led music activities as much or as little as they want, from wherever they want in the room.

It was lovely to see the confidence and self-esteem of the young people grow through the sessions each week. For a young person who couldn’t even access the room to then being confident enough to be dancing and joining in was such an achievement.

Who it’s for…

Our guide age range is between 8 - 12 years, but older children are welcome if the group fills like a good fit for individual needs.

We are grateful to Arts Council England and to Portishead Town Council for funding enabling us to run this programme fully subsidised.

Participants are welcome to make voluntary contributions on a Pay-What-You-Choose basis.

A note for parents and professionals…

Music Makers is a Creative Health programme facilitated by a trained creative health practitioner. It is not a scheme of work, teaching, or therapy. It is a non-issue specific creative space for children to reconnect with themselves and others.

A referral form must be completed before attending.

Referrals can be made by parents, carers, or other professionals.
